The Third Wave

This movie was about an amazing teaching experience that still resonates today.

We watched an amazing documentary about a social experiment conducted by Ron Jones in Paulo Alto in 1967 with his class to show just how easy it is to get caught up in a movement.

We can all learn so many lessons from this. Not just how easy it was for the dictatorship to develop but around how important it is to stick up for what we believe.

The Student Holocaust Education Movement (SHEM) presents:

Could it Happen Here? “The Wave” as told by teacher Ron Jones.

The event featured “Lesson Plan,” a film documenting the story of the Third Wave accompanied by an address from Ron Jones, the teacher who proved that even democratic societies are not immune to the appeal of fascism.

Ron Jones is an American writer, and teacher in Palo Alto, California, and San Francisco, California. He started The Third Wave in his high school world history classroom. This was the inspiration for “The Wave,” a famous book by Todd Strasser, and the movie based on the book.

This is an amazing experiment bringing complete strangers together. It’s really great seeing how quickly they demonstrated humanity towards each other

This concept gets taken even further here

Media Propaganda Webquest

As we approach the end of Term 3 I was looking for some really engaging reading activities for my students.

I came across this excellent webquest. We will be addressing this challenge:

You are a member of an advertising team hired by a wealthy philanthropist who wants you to design an ad campaign.  You must find ways to educate people on the dangers of some products or messages.

Why would this person want to expose the truth about advertising?

What is the problem with some ads?  Are those ads really dangerous?  Are their messages lies?

How can you help people see the truth?

Your team of creative artists and writers must:

  • choose a advertisement for a specific product or a type of product;
  • clearly define what the problem with the ads are;
  • summarize the problem and outline a solution or the truth;
  • create striking visuals to capture people’s attention;
  • write concise headlines and articles exposing the lies and promoting the truth;
  • complete a self evaluation form;
  • complete a group evaluation form.
Use this Evaluation criteria to see how well you’re doing.
And remember:
Advertising using powerful media to control peoples’ choices.  We also have power, the power to choose, the power to think for ourselves, and the power to influence others.  How we use that power is central to the creation of good and healthy society.  If we allow others to control us without employing our power, we give up too much.  If we allow others to misuse their power in our society we allow them to determine the future for us.

Hi Everyone – We’re in the last part of Term 2. We are all so excited to see your groups showing off their amazing models and convincing us that your chosen renewable energy source is the best one in our Energy Expo. I know you’ll want to perfect your models, displays, animations, presentations so that you are fully prepared for Friday. Don’t forget to invite your parents!

Here are the tasks for the next 2 weeks:Get onto Manga High – we are challenged to another Fai-To and sadly not enough of you logged on last time and we lost to St Bernards in the UK. There are 5 separate challenges that close on 30th June. How are you going in each of them? Now is your last chance to get to the top of the leaderboard!

Have you tried Bidmas Blaster – Addition & subtraction, Ice Ice Maybe – Estimate with addition & subtraction,Factors and multiples (Prodigi quiz), Ice Ice Maybe – Estimate with multiplication & division and Identify factor pairs (Prodigi quiz)?

Maybe you could post your high scores on your Blog and say which game/ challenge you enjoyed the most and why.

We’d love you to take a few minutes to review your Semester’s work – you might like to use these prompts or think of your own – what a perfect subject for an entry on your Blog – or an excellent piece of self evaluation to share at your parent teacher meeting on Weds 26th June. Parents don’t forget to book your time here.

My students had a great discussion about the aftermath of the Adam Goodes racial vilification incident on Friday 24th May.

They were encouraged to think about the impact of what the 13 year old girl said.

I loved this quote from Andrew Demertiou –  “Let’s use Friday night as a motivation to promote greater respect for one another, whether it is an opposition player on the football field or anywhere else.”

You can see Adam Goodes press conference here from the ABC website.

The Human Power Station

We watched a great BBC documatary called The Human Power Station. In this show a family’s house was taken off the electricity grid and connected to a human bike-powered powerr source.

We saw how much electricty was required to do simple day to day things like power a toaster, kettle, electric shower and ove.

The more heat required the more electricity was needed. The power shower needed 78 of the 80 cyclists to become hot.

It was a really good way of showing us how much power was needed to keep a normal household running and make us all think about how much energy is wasted.

To This Day

We shared this inspirational video about challenging and confronting bullying in class today.

To This Day Project is a project based on a spoken word poem written by Shane Koyczan called “To This Day”, to further explore the profound and lasting impact that bullying can have on an individual.
Schools and families are in desperate need of proper tools to confront this problem. We can give them a starting point… A message that will have a far reaching and long lasting effect in confronting bullying.
Animators and motion artists brought their unique styles to 20 second segments that will thread into one fluid voice.
This collaborative volunteer effort will demonstrate what a community of caring individuals are capable of when they come together.
