As we approach the end of Term 3 I was looking for some really engaging reading activities for my students.
I came across this excellent webquest. We will be addressing this challenge:
You are a member of an advertising team hired by a wealthy philanthropist who wants you to design an ad campaign. You must find ways to educate people on the dangers of some products or messages.
Why would this person want to expose the truth about advertising?
What is the problem with some ads? Are those ads really dangerous? Are their messages lies?
How can you help people see the truth?
Your team of creative artists and writers must:
- choose a advertisement for a specific product or a type of product;
- clearly define what the problem with the ads are;
- summarize the problem and outline a solution or the truth;
- create striking visuals to capture people’s attention;
- write concise headlines and articles exposing the lies and promoting the truth;
- complete a self evaluation form;
- complete a group evaluation form.
Use this Evaluation criteria to see how well you’re doing.
And remember:
Advertising using powerful media to control peoples’ choices. We also have power, the power to choose, the power to think for ourselves, and the power to influence others. How we use that power is central to the creation of good and healthy society. If we allow others to control us without employing our power, we give up too much. If we allow others to misuse their power in our society we allow them to determine the future for us.
